Another all night driving adventure - that started off as the last of the Tequila from the night before was trying to leave my system. Fortunately, Marianna was willing to drive the first shift so I could try to recover a little more. It took another 8 hours. I am pretty sure that the Margaritas they were serving were Tequila, a squeeze of lemon, and ice. After 3 or 4 of those, I had to switch. Pshew, New Orleans!
We had a great time there, as mentioned below, we were set up as far as having a place to stay. Plus, Miguel Mito was there to set us up for shows and restaurants.
We ate at a Vietnamese place called 9 Roses, and it was the bomb! I went with the Pho Gai (tho they call it Pho Tai there) soup to start. It was dang good. There was also a couple of other soups that I don't know the name of, but were good. There was ginger chicken, not too salty, and not too light on the ginger; there was a porky/cabbagy sour sweet dish; and a bunch of other food. We ate and ate and ate... and it was all good. I wish I could remember some of those other foods (I'll try to get Mike on-line to fill in the missing names). If you get to New Orleans, and you have an urge for Vietnamese foods, you should go to this place, 9 Roses. I'm not sure where it is, we were at a microbrewery before we headed out for the food.
After that it was time to go bowling! We had a bowling adventure in Little Rock, so felt the need to experience Bowling New Orleans Style at the Rock n Bowl. It was dang cool. Live band, bowling, and craziness. We had to push our way through the dance floor to get to the lanes. Unfortunately, it was pretty dang dark in there, so the video footage isn't that great. But, no matter, here is the Bowl, Baby, Bowl! video. This could be the video that breaks the web page's back, since it's a whopping 2MB. If it doesn't work, we shall have to find another way. As Miguel put it: "It was a Bay Watch kinda day!"
The next day started out on the same foot...eating. We went to a place called "Elizabeth's" Hmmm, I had the turkey gumbo, Marianna had the Fried Potato Po Boy, Bar-B-Q shrimp for Gabriella, and Miguel had the fried oysters in blue cheese sauce...it was a tasty breakfast all in all. After a bout with a laundry machine, Miguel picked us up to go and see a stand up comedian friend of his. We were on the guest list...and in New Orleans, we were big! They gave us a table in the back, but soon realized that we should be in the front row, so they moved us up, front and center, best seats in the place! The show was hilarious. I have some video, but nothing worth eating up the remaining bit of the webspace. I think his name is Pat, used to open up for Sienfeld, and was later a writer on the show. Good stuff. From there, we went to see Ellis Marsalis, father of all the other Marsalises, and his quartet. The drummer was awesome!
Dang! After all of that, the brunch at Elizabeth's (I had this french toast, bourbon banana thing that was amazing!) and the trip down to see the gulf of Mexico seem almost insignificant, but they were also dang fun. That's what led up to the party with the Marghies. It gets a bit fuzzy after that, until about Huston...
